It was a delight to have awarded Lauren with the Publishing Prize for her MFA exhibition in September 2010. This has been a really interesting project to work on, if somewhat frustrating at times, and in hind-sight, we could have made the plates more manageable to edition. It was back in April when David Leigh flew in from Albuquerque to work on these to wonderfully quirky and colourful lithographs. We were also in a different workshop. David was the last artist collaborate with us at the old location in the confines of the oddly shaped cosy space. We can only imagine what he would have come up with given the elbow room of the new shop.

Back in November Turning Point Network North East came to interview Iris Priest about her work and the lithograph 'In That Beyond' that she made with us. This is for their 11 for 2011 series, a pilot programme of artists films featuring emerging and established contemporary artists in the North East gaining National and International recognition. The artists featured were shortlisted by the Critical Dialogue Working Group from a longlist of suggestions from the Turning Point Network.

Prints from the Tamarind Institute, New Mexico.

This world-class exhibition of works by leading international artists Jim Dine, Kiki Smith and Lesley Dill, celebrates the diversity of the medium of lithography and the accomplishments of the renowned Tamarind Institute of New Mexico.

Tamarind Institute is a non profit centre for lithography that trains master-printers and houses a professional collaborative studio for artists. It is recognised internationally for its contributions to the growth of contemporary printmaking around the world.

Delighted that the collaboration with Graham Gussin (Yes/No Path - published by Northern Print) is centre stage in the exhibition Good Times, Bad Times, All Times Get Over at The Queen's Hall Art Centre, Hexham. Many thanks to wildlife artists Paul Henery & Bruce Pearson plus builder Greg for delivering and assembling our Vandercook SP-15 Test Press. It'll work fine for now with manual inking until parts and inking rollers can be sourced.

Following the press assembly we pulled out a lovely stone for Bruce Pearson to experiment on. He produced a very fluid and stormy sea w/Albatross using tusche, pencils & rubbing ink. We look forward to Bruce returning in the future for a longer and less frantic visit.

A lovely day spent in the shop with Lauren Healey tweaking her project. You may remember that back in Sept 2010 we gave Lauren a Publishing Award and the project has been on going and dependant on the British weather, see > Capturing Shadows. In May just after the move additional plates were developed and proofed in black. Since then Lauren has been experimenting with various combinations of plates & colours.

Today was spent solidifying these experiments and coming up with a final strategy. Ink was mixed, paper torn and the press rolled out samples. The final piece will be printed in two colours and made up of six images laid end to end to measure approx 12 3/4" x 102"

Nicola Farr - Work Experience Photo Diary

With GCSE exams completed it was time for a spot of work experience for Nicola Farr. We are very happy that Nicola wanted to spend some time with us before enjoying the summer holidays and prior to A Levels beginning in September. Tasks includes, letterpress printing our new stationary, graining stones, assisting at the press and being the artist & printer, as well as seeing the start, middle & end of some projects. For sure there was much coffee and tea to be enjoyed with a mighty fine pastry or three.

Rachael Kidd has continued to be in the shop after completing Fine Art Level 2 at Newcastle University, making light work of the pile of Ray Richardson stones that needed to be resurfaced, before heading away for holidays.

Fellow Tamarind trained printer Linsay Croall from Peacock Visual Arts joined us and helped out with the proofing of a few runs for Chris Burden's piece 'A Man Free World.' How good it was to be able to have three people working on the press at the same time, the joys of ample space.

Prior to the workshop move we had been contacted by Modern Empire to work on a project with London based Russell Maurice. Initially it was thought that meeting the exhibition deadline would not be possible, but the swift install into the new premises and speedy postal services help make it happen.

Two rounds of proofing were required to produce these four pieces, with subtle changes in the colour to create the right balance between the image and the silver powder embellishments.

Hole Editions has moved!!

Over the past few weeks we have been moving the workshop to new premises at 36 Lime Street, after a productive six years at the Mushroom Works location. The end of April was taken up with packing up the workshop and dismantling the workbenches & graining sink. Keys were received from Open Clasp before the Bank Holiday weekend and the move commenced on the last day of April.

The move was only possible with the kind support, help & strength of Peter J. Evans, Nigel Easter, Gallagher & Turner, Richard Rigg, Narbi Price, Ant Macari, Sean Mallen & Nazim Kourgli.

Open Clasp kindly donated lots of furniture and extras which have helped enormously. There is still some tinkering to be done over the coming months, but we are delighted to have the workshop functional and the press in action in such a short space of time.

The 1100+ visitors to 36 Lime Street during the Late Shows were able to visit the new workshop and see it in action, some were lucky enough to be able to print their own lithos.

On Friday 1st April, David Leigh arrived in Newcastle from Albuquerque, New Mexico. We allowed him to recover from the 19 hours of travelling and adjust to the low altitude before commencing with his projects. Leigh's work is crazy and colourful with mad melted eyes. He makes drawings, paintings and wall drawings, this will be his first lithograph since is undergrad at ASU around ten years ago.

Less than a week into the project the first finished proof was pulled. Measuring 16 x 20" printed in seven colours from six photo-litho plates and a key stone on BFK Rives off white. The second image is well under way and will hopefully be completed by Thursday prior to his stupid o'clock fight out of the country on Friday morning.

We'll be having a little party on Thursday 14th April, 6-8pm if you'd like to come by and visit to meet David and see the proofs.

New Artist: Simon Woolham

I first meet Simon Woolham perhaps four years ago when were on the same Trivial Pursuit team, it must have been a good night as neither one of us can remember if we were on the winning team.

Simon kindly supported last years 5th Birthday Draw by designing one of the tickets, 'Land of Chairs.'

Along with his wife Hannah and six month old Ava, they ventured back to the North East and over the last week there has been much catching up with friends as well as hard graft in the workshop. Simon took to drawing on the stones like a duck to water, happily switching from his trusty biro for litho pencils. During the week five pieces were produced, 'At the Edge,' 'Over the Edge,' 'Do Yourself a Favour,' 'The Receivers' and 'Suspect Device.' You can see a sneak peek of these in the last image.

Ant Macari: Signing editions

Newcastle University Fine Art under-graduate Rachael Kidd joined us last year as an assistant. Rachael has been developing her stone graining powers, most recently preparing and re-surfacing the stone for George Shaw (see bottom photo). Other tasks include assisting at the press, dusting the silver powder on the lightning bolts for Ant Macari’s ‘Yaya Con Dios’ and printing some letterpress. Rachael will shortly be creating some pieces of her own and the placement has become a LifeWorkArt module as part of her studies.

She was in Newcastle for the opening of her exhibition "Sticks and Stones" at the University Gallery & Baring Wing. The show opened on the 26th August and runs until the 1st Oct.

Josie Dick: Toner fun

Josie Dick assisted in our workshop a couple of years ago and this summer she graduated from Newcastle University. We invited her in to the studio for a couple of days to experiment with toner powder, using similar methods as those she employed to create her degree show works. Josie made some new pieces directly on paper and also on ball grained aluminium litho plates.

The resulting works are on show at the Cluny Gallery.

Artists return: Ray Richardson

As you may remember back in May, Ray Richardson came and began working on a series of new prints with us. We were delighted that he was able to return last week to continue with the series. Seven two colour lithographs have been proofed and approved. You can see six of these hung on the line next to Ray.

Carrie Kaser & Print Zero 7

On Sunday I had a little trip down to London to catch up with some fellow Tamarind people. Marjorie Devon came over to speak at a symposium at Seacourt Print Workshop in Belfast, but failing to be able to make the trip over to Belfast, a long coach ride down to the big smoke was the next best thing. I met up with Carrie Kaser first, then Sharon Lee, later meeting up with Linsay Croall, Marge & Ellie Lamb for some great Thai food in Soho and good conversation.

Carrie came up to Newcastle on Monday to help me out in the workshop, assisting the editioning of a new print for the Print Zero Exchange 7. A seven run litho, sister to the 'Circus' piece made for the 6th exchange.

On Tuesday Carrie continued to assist while also beginning work on her print, 'Ten City Buses,' for the exchange. This was drawn, proofed and editioned in the same long day, with signing and packing taking place on Wednesday before she headed off to Edinburgh.

Geordie Shepherd: Olic

In 2007 Geordie Shepherd came over form Canada to create three works which are part of his 'Olic' series. Available now is his self publish book on his 'Olic People.'

"Olic is an artistic and literary exploration of the Olic People, their life philosophy, world and times, written and drawn through the eyes and voice of a later-age cultural researcher."

In my final year of University I conceived of a drawing project based upon the voyage of characters based within a fictional culture. Inspired by my studies in anthropology, mythology, and sociology, I decided to create a handmade “ethnographic” tome. From this original text, my practice has continued to bridge gaps between narrative, fantasy, text and drawing, as exemplified by the Traveling Pottery Box, the Olic drawing series, numerous ceramic vessels and, most recently, The Traveling Boxes.

Olic (2010) is a written and illustrated 84-page book that is available from Lulu self-publishing press in three formats: Paperback, hardcover and e-book.

The 5th Birthday Prize Draw & Winners

That's it folks the 5th Birthday Prize Draw has been and gone. Everyone who took part is a winner, some more than others, congratulations!!

It's been great fun all in all and the party last night was the icing on the cake. It was looking like the weather wasn't going to play nice, but the rain did eventually cease as the guests began to arrive. On-line ticket sales were stopped at 6.30pm but sales in person happened until just before the draw. Courtesy of Brian Degger we were able to stream the draw almost live and it was thrilling to hear that people did watch the draw from afar. When it works technology is great.

Five artists kindly designed the tickets for the draw and the money raised from sales will be going towards projects with these artists. Big thanks also go to all the people that helped sell the tickets and bigger thanks to everyone who bought tickets, your support is golden.

Our 5th Birthday approaches, only three days to go. That's three days until the party at the workshop, three days until the prize draw and therefore three days left to get your mits on tickets for the draw. Still need to get yours, then visit the website!

The draw will take place on Sat 29th May, you do not need to be present at the draw to win. Tickets and prizes will be sent worldwide. If you can attend the draw, come along to the workshop from 6.30pm. Visit to Doncaster: Graham Firth's exhibition

I was very pleased that I managed to get myself down to Doncaster to catch Graham Firth's retrospective exhibition of prints at the Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery. Graham is Doncaster's artist of the year and also taught me lithography back in 1993. He came to Hole Editions in the summer of 2008 and produced seven lithographs. These were featured in the exhibition along side his juicy lino cuts and screen prints. Also on show were some of his sketch books and lino blocks, fantastic to see.

Graham kindly gave me a tour of the new(ish) printmaking facility in The Hub at Doncaster College. The press he taught me on is still in working order, although as Graham pointed out, the levigator has led a full life and needs to be put to pasture.

It had to be done and all good preparation for a scouting mission to the North East. We were delighted that Ray made the effort to visit either side of his wedding party in Carnoustie. A walking tour of the sights was taken prior to starting any serious stone work and we paused for the first play-off leg for Ray's beloved Charlton Athletic. It was only the briefest of visits but a start was made on three images, two direct to stone and one a transfer drawn in Gateshead. Plans are a foot for a return (longer) visit at the end of July.

5th Birthday Prize Draw: Tickets

Hole Editions will be celebrating it's 5th Birthday this year. To mark this event we shall be holding a fund raising prize draw, like we did for our 3rd Birthday. Artists we have collaborated over the past two years have kindly donated artist proofs as prizes along with a couple of books and a CD.

In addition five further artists have been commissioned to design the draw tickets. Monies raised from the ticket sales will help fund future projects with these artists. The tickets have been printed from photo-polymer plates on our Adana letterpress and are well worth the entry fee in themselves.

Entitled Northern Stars, the exhibition will present an outstanding range of work, including painting, photography and sculpture.

In keeping with Saatchi Online's mission to democratise the traditional hierarchies of the art world and give artists access to collectors for their work, Northern Stars features the work of 8 artists chosen from the 100,000 artists registered on Saatchi Online. Demo & printing at Rowan University

While on a visit to the US for Philagrafika and the Southern Graphics Council conference, I was delighted to be invited to Rowan University by David Vaccaro, lecturer in printmaking.

Along with Jeremy Leckenbusch, my host and fellow Tamarind Institute graduate, we conducted an afternoon demonstration to the undergraduates on the printmaking program. The artist was student John Mitchell, who allowed us to process and proof his plate. It was thoroughly enjoyable to meet and talk to the students. We did well in keeping the pizza feast away from the press area.

We returned to assisted John in the editioning of the two runs for his print, a pale flat followed by the key. John is continuing with lithography and hopes to attend Tamarind's Summer Workshop next year.

Had an interesting and relaxing day in New York, drinking coffee and catching up with friends, Deborah & Jeremy. Then headed to the Tanya Bonakdar Gallery to meet Mark Dion and Robert Williams (University of Cumbria), for Mark to sign his completed edition "Tropical Collectors." After which I was privileged to be introduced to Sarah Suzuki, Assistant Curator of Prints and Illustrated Books at MoMA and to hear Mark discuss the history of his printmaking career to students from the School of Visual Arts.

The print is a silent witness. Whether deliberate, as with a constructed print, or involuntary (a fingerprint, the impression left on a pillow in the morning), a print is always the tangible evidence left from a past action, now gone. It seems significant therefore that Ben Jeans Houghton's new edition of prints were germinated by a double absence. First of all, by his discovery of a discarded collection of illustrations (the author absent or gone), and secondly, by the subject matter of these illustrations: cadavers in the Newcastle University morgue (the body without the presence of self).

The atmospheric virtue of this series of prints doesn't just lie in the myth of their origins however, but in their sublime and delicate rendering. The Series begins as a literal, figurative transcription from the found illustrations and original cadavers which Jeans Houghton visited in the Morgue. Then with the idiosyncratic trepidation and wonder of an artist exploring his subject on the edge of discovery, Jeans Houghton's images become increasingly volatile. The recognisable, figurative human elements (simultaneously beautiful and horrible) rupture and destabalize as the images become permeated with the mists of the unknown, and the imaginary.

While the series begins as a witness to real death, these prints do not depict fear or explicit horror but instead they speak of a latent divine, and the corporeal, which exists at the border of ourselves, our imagination, and non-existence.

Peter J Evans: Making Twenty

A cold damp January evening sees the start of the hand drawn portion of Peter J Evans' box set 'Making Twenty.' I paid him a visit at his studio to watch and assist with the first set. His drawing board is set with registration tapes and acetate, pencils are shuffled, with a sharpener at the ready. On a separate bench next to him is the mountain of prints ready to be drawn on to with approximately 3,700 squares. Behind him is another surface ready for the completed pieces. Tunes are playing in the background.

On Sunday we were delighted that Dan Lovelace made the long journey up from London to spend a week in the workshop. We made a start on Monday morning after a relaxing evening sampling the local beverages, purchasing books from the honesty piano and enjoying a wee bit of folk music.

Dan is initially working versions of three images as monotypes which may have hand drawn elements and/or possibly move forward as monoprints.

New artist web pages have now been added to the website for Carla Bromhead and Karl de Vroomen.

Carla came along in August to collaborate on three lithographs for the Publishing Award she was given back in May. Have a flick through the blog archive for August to see Carla at work drawing on the stones. Approvals were signed in November and the projects will be editioned in early 2010.

Karl completed five days of monotyping as his Postgraduate Publishing Award last week and they are now up on the website and available for purchase. Six of the pieces are available through his gallery Opus-art.

These monotypes, along with a selection of new works by other artists, will be on show and available to buy in the Christmas Exhibition at Opus Art from December 11, 2009, with an exclusive Preview Evening on Thursday, December 10, 2009, from 6-9pm.

Carla Bromhead - Signs approvals

You may remember back in August, Carla came along to the workshop with the Publishing Award that she received at her degree show in May. Carla drew two stones with three images for her lithographs Albert, Cecil & Derek. There were plans to make a forth with Winston, but alas he wasn't to be. I was delighted that Carla was able to return to the shop to see the completed proofs and sign the approvals to print.

A trial proof of each image will be donated to the Fine Art Postcard Auction which will take place on Thursday 26th November in the Hatton Gallery.

More information about the prints will be on the website shortly, until then here are some images of the approvals being chopped and signed. Thanks to Carla for snapping a few pictures and her dad for the last one.

This week has been all about Publishing Awards. Initially with undergraduate winner Carla being in the shop drawing and seeing her stones being proofed. To heading in to the city yesterday afternoon for a pre-preview of the Newcastle University Masters of Fine Art Shows to decide upon a winner for a Postgraduate Publishing Award. After much deliberation Karl de Vroomen was given the award. Congratulations to Karl, we are looking forward to having you come along to the workshop to discuss projects and congratulations also to all the exhibitors on a fantastic show, opening + after party!

Carla Bromhead: First proofs

It's been a productive morning, fresh tea in the pot, Carla continued working on Derek while Albert and Cecil were proofed. We tried and couple of different Japanese papers for potential chine collé and also straight on to Somerset satin. Carla had a quick inspection before heading back downstairs to Derek.
